It’s that time of year again! Ironman Texas 2013 is upon us and this year we have 8 NET athletes racing – woohoo! Leading up to the race we will spotlight them so that you can get to know the athletes you will be tracking and cheering for on Saturday.
TONIGHT…Misty Copen and Kasey Cigich
Athletic Background? I am a very uncoordinated individual so typical sports do not work for me 🙂 I found my groove with endurance sports. I started running serious long distance about 2 years ago, started cycling last May, & freestyle swimming began in October.
Why Ironman? I first saw IM when I watched a video of Team Hoyt & saw the 80 year old nun doing Kona & I thought that was incredible. I thought it would be amazing to do that but never really dreamt of it happening until I heard about NET & that the owner was doing 3IM in one year- WOW! After a few long runs & 1 century ride, I thought now was the best time to do it.
Goals for this race? My first & foremost goal is to finish the IM injury free, without any flat tires & a smile on my face. Of course, if I finished in my goal time, I would be more than thrilled.
What are you most nervous about? For anyone training with me, it’s obvious- the SWIM!!Something about 3000 people starting at the same time, heading to the same place, is a little overwhelming.
What are you most excited about? The finish line- it will be an amazingly overwhelming experience that all of us training have been thinking about for months.
Anything else? I feel so blessed to have this opportunity to do an IM. I am very thankful I have had an amazing trainer and made new friendships through this experience. My support system is indescribable-I could not do any of this without them. I’m grateful that I am physically able to perform these events & I do it for the people that wish they could but can’t or even for those that are afraid to try. I am looking forward to reaching this goal and hope that I inspire someone else to try it!
Athletic Background? I started running about 2 years after I got to college. I was only doing shorter races at the time. After I graduated I needed something more so I signed up for my first half marathon. Once that was done I need something else to fill in my time. I found NET and there triathlon program. I did my first sprint tri in June of 2011 and have been hooked ever since!!
Why Ironman? Good question! I’ve heard from everyone I talk to it’s because I’m crazy 🙂 Really though its because I went out to the finish line of Ironman Tx 2012 in the last hour of the race. Even in that last hour from 11:00-12:00 the people and crowd support was unbelievable; I knew it was something I wanted to be apart of. Before we left the house that night I told my mom ” We probably shouldn’t go because I know it is going to make want to do one!” Sure enough, less then a week away from Ironman Tx 2013 and I can’t wait!
Goals For Race? My goal for this race is simply to cross that finish line with a huge smile on my face!
What are you most nervous about? I am the most nervous for the swim. I think all the people and not being able to see the bottom is what really makes me nervous about it. I think that once I am out of the water I will be just fine!
Anything else? I just can’t believe that this whole experience is coming to an end. It seems like just last week that I was sitting in front of my computer waiting for registration to open!
